America is Dying (Apparently)

So people have been telling me and I’ve been hearing on the news that America is in deep trouble. If things don’t go the right way and soon, disaster could be coming, and we could lose the USA itself. Now, I haven’t really heard yet why people are saying that, so I’m just going to do some research and get back to you in a minute.

Wow, you were right. America really is in some deep trouble.

Apparently, sex slavery is a big part of America’s underground. It’s really saddening. This shouldn’t be happening anywhere, especially in a country where the 13th Amendment abolished all forms of slavery over 160 years ago.

What, that wasn’t what you were talking about? Seems like nothing could be killing America worse than that, but I’ll see if I can find what you mean.

Man, you weren’t kidding. America has good reason to be afraid of its impending doom.

Apparently, homegrown terrorists have been a problem. Radical Muslims are converting people to Islam and brainwashing them into their terrorist actions right here on US soil. I know we’ve always looked at terrorism as a foreign threat, but it seems to be coming from within. That’s scary stuff, guys.

Oh, it has nothing to do with terrorism either? Oh, it’s more of a political issue? Okay, I’ll see what political issue is destroying the fabric of America.

Okay, now I think I know what you mean. Certain people in the government are trying to take our rights away. It’s astonishing, and something should be done to stop it.

People no longer have freedom of religion. Apparently, a gay couple can sue a Christian baker for refusing to make them a wedding cake, despite the fact that it goes against their religion. As a devout Christian myself, I think that’s ridiculous. What’s next? Churches lose their non-profit status? They’ll be considered discriminatory businesses? Label them a hate group and start making Christianity illegal? What does this mean for us?

Oh, it’s not that either? That seems pretty extreme, but if you say something worse than that is happening, I guess I’ll try to find it.

Wait, is this about the election coming up?

Apparently, no matter who wins the election, America is in some kind of danger.

That sentiment is nonsense, and the fact that Christians are saying that the outcome of the election will ruin this country seriously disturbs me.

Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment. For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you have no fear of the one who is in authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive his approval, for he is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God’s wrath on the wrongdoer. Therefore one must be in subjection, not only to avoid God’s wrath but also for the sake of conscience. For because of this you also pay taxes, for the authorities are ministers of God, attending to this very thing. Pay to all what is owed to them: taxes to whom taxes are owed, revenue to whom revenue is owed, respect to whom respect is owed, honor to whom honor is owed.

Romans 13:1-7 (ESV)

As Christians, we need to trust that God has a plan no matter who gets put in office. In the end, we are subject to God, and we have no place to undermine or fight authorities who don’t prevent us from worshiping God (and even so, we should continue to worship underground rather than overthrow the government).

So this election, much like the last few about which similar claims were made, is not the end of the world. In the end, we will still love the Lord even if it becomes harder. Presidents do not have the power to take anything out of the Constitution, including religious freedom, right to bear arms or slavery. Presidents do not have the power to force churches to do anything. Presidents are supposed to enforce the law that is there, and even if they make some laws themselves, systems are in place to keep this country from becoming a dictatorship. At maximum, if the next president is a bad leader, we get eight years with him/her. So stop acting like it’s the end of the world. We still have it better than most nations no matter what. Just something to think about.
