I went to a worship service recently in which the speaker seemed to just throw her sermon together in a matter of minutes, leaving no time to fact check.
This woman pulled out the wrong meaning of the Greek word Zoe, got the hierarchy of needs backward, and then basically preached the prosperity gospel. Not to mention she spent the first ten minutes bragging about how great her ministry was in 2015 and then used all her verses out of context.
Google searches aren’t that hard, and many of the first results are from credible sources. If you don’t trust Google, Bible Hub can give you information on just about anything in the Word, from Greek words to specific verses based on topics. Research is not difficult in this day and age, so use it.
The fact is if you’re giving wrong information to a congregation, then it’s your responsibility when someone expects to receive financial blessing for financially blessing someone else and it doesn’t happen. It’s on you when someone is discussing the hierarchy of needs and someone else actually in the field of psychology calls them out on just how wrong they are. Even if unintentional, these are lies you’re preaching to the congregation, and it can easily be fixed by just looking it up.
Remind them of these things, and charge them before God not to quarrel about words, which does no good, but only ruins the hearers. Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth. But avoid irreverent babble, for it will lead people into more and more ungodliness, and their talk will spread like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus, who have swerved from the truth, saying that the resurrection has already happened. They are upsetting the faith of some. But God’s firm foundation stands, bearing this seal: “The Lord knows those who are his,” and, “Let everyone who names the name of the Lord depart from iniquity.”
2 Timothy 2:14-19.
RIGHTLY HANDLING THE WORD OF TRUTH. When you spit out inaccuracy, you are WRONGLY handling the word of truth. If you have trouble finding good outside facts about the Bible, just use the Bible, the best primary source in history. But if you want to jump outside and find the Greek words and different scientific principles, make sure you’re going to get it right, because if you get it wrong you make Christians look like idiots. Just something to think about.
